Depression

What is Depression?

If you are suffering from depression, you are probably ‘feeling quite down’. It can affect people differently, but usually changes how you feel, how you think about life, your energy levels, your concentration, your sleep and/or your appetite.

You may feel hopeless about everything, have feelings of  either numbness, sadness, anger or anxiety.  You may stop socialising or doing activities that you previously enjoyed. If you do go out, you may feel cut off or distant from others.

Common symptoms of depression are a few or many, of the following:

  • Low mood most of the day
  • Loss of pleasure in activities/life
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  • Diminished ability to concentrate or indecision
  • Lack of motivation
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Change in appetite
  • Difficult emotions such as numbness, anxiety, sadness or anger
  • Hopelessness
  • Feeling weighed down or agitated
  • Loss of energy or fatigue
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Fortunately, depression can be treated with the right type of therapy (severe depression may also require medication).
